Origin of Bartica Regatta In July 1947, a yatch that had crossed the atlantic passed through Bartica with a fast runabout powe red by a 22 horsepower outboard engine. The owner of the yatch enjoyed speeding across the magnificent Essiquibo River and the public was soon hooked. A Challenger in the person of Charles Guthrie, Manager of the Bartica Electrical Works at the said time, possessed an Aluminum Utility Boat also Powered by a 22 horsepower outboard Engine. This Historical race between the tow on the Essiquibo needless to say attracted almost the entire surrounding population. The Trans Atlantic yacht man who sailed forty odd miles up the Esequibo River to Bartica created double history by being the first and probably the only overseas yacht man to have displayed such adventurous river navig ation skills in Guyana, and it was he who provided the inspiration for the Bartica Regatta. This event has since grown and matured into an annual Calendar event which attracts both regional and international visitors. It is exciting, colorful and fun for the entire family. Today what was formally a water sport has now various types of sporting events. Activities begin as early as three weeks to four weeks ahead of the Easter Sunday. Dominoes ,football , circle tennis, road race, are some of the activities leading up to the Grand Easter Sunday Regatta events. Don't forget to mark you calendar. We welcome you to Bartica.
